Episode 88: Adeptus Fujin

SEASON FIVE

Every episode our team provides travelers with visual and video aids to help better understand comparisons, learn more about topics, and follow what we’re discussing. While we strive to include links to official Genshin Impact resources, some may also be to third-party channels.

Below are some resources surrounding this episode about Adeptus Fujin that may be helpful to understand the talking points and lore better:

The Golden carp Mingxiao Lantern. It is a giant orange, yellow and red parade float essentially that showcases a carp floating through the sky. It sits on a red platform in Liyue Harbor.

Before we even heard the name Fujin, we unintentionally celebrated her during the 2022 Lantern Rite. The Mingxiao Lantern that year was a golden carp. Back then, there was little known about the subject of that year’s centerpiece, but with the release of Chenyu Vale, we were able to put the pieces together.

Real life carp (bottom left), koi (top middle), and goldfish (top right).

Have you ever seen a carp in real life? Spoiler alert: they’re nowhere near as pretty as Fujin’s carp form. She looks more like a koi to us. Or a fancy goldfish, according to Tif.

Adeptus Fujin in her human and carp form. In her human form, Fujin has brown hair pulled half back, a yellow diamond on her forehead and beautiful light green eyes. She wears a yellow turtle neck shirt with long sleeves and orange and teal embellishments. The carp version, shown in the bottom left corner, is a small but pretty fish that is yellow with teal eyes and ombre teal to yellow tail. She has two orange entenas on her head.

As Bee pointed out, Fujin is one of the prettiest NPCs we have in the game. Her ethereal presence in both human and carp form is just beautiful. What other NPCs do you think compare to the aesthetics of Fujin?

The Chenyu Vale Adeptea tree in Qiaying Village. There is a teapot fountain sitting on top of a rock structure holding water. Around it are tree roots and we can see a tree growing out of the tea pot. It is a beautiful site.

Tif gushes about the tea tree at the center of Qiaoying Village. It was planted by Fujin centuries ago and has been a source of their specialty Chenyu Adeptea ever since. Adorned with a built-in teapot, it is a central focus of the village.

A real can of Fresca (left) and a bottle of Fontaine's Fonta (right).

The Fresca is in a silver can with a blue design. The middle has a white stripe that says Fresca, a lemon symbol and a yellow stripe describing the flavor. The Fonta is a glass see-through bottle of brown liquid with a yellow label and cork.

Frescas, Frescos, and Fontas, oh my! We made a small mistake in the episode when we accidentally called the paintings on Dragonspine Frescas instead of Frescos. The ancient paintings are not refreshing sparkling soda or the trendy Fonta drink from Fontaine. Please don’t try to drink them.

The Votive Rainjade located in Carp's Rest in Chenyu Vale. It is a light green mechanism that glows and is beautiful. In the center is a glowing ball that is surrounded by two half circle pieces that come together around the ball to make a full circle. A light green ooze comes out of the top of it.

To restore the water and soil in Chenyu Vale, we need to return spirit carp to the Votive Rainjade in Carp’s Rest. This is the place Fujin slumbered to regain her strength, in case the name “carp’s rest” wasn’t obvious enough. Sometimes Genshin likes to feed us the names with a spoon.

Three types of fish: An Asian sheepshead werasse (Top left), blobfish (bottom left) and lionfish goldfish (Middle right)

Imagine Fujin wasn’t a fancy carp but instead, a butthead fish like Bee mentions. While he was talking about the Asian sheepshead wrasse, Feens and Tif had some less horrifying options, like the blobfish or lionhead goldfish, respectively.

Little Mao, a child with blue triangular designs of face paint on each cheek of his face. He additionally has a blue triangle in between his eyes. He wears a blue headband with his the bangs of his dark hair hanging out over top of them. He wears an off white button up shirt, a light blue vest and dark blue pants.

Our guide during the Chenyu Vale World Quest is Little Mao. To Feens’ disappointment, he’s just a regular kid, despite the blue paint on his face. He’s a chatty little guy who helps us understand the history of the area and the Adepti who lived there.

Lingyuan, a blue Suanni. She is large and has various shades of blue in her coloring, but is mostly a light blue. Her head has four large ears - two that stand upright almost like fish fins and two that resemble more of a fox ear. She has yellow antlers coming out of the top of her head and two matching yellow entennas coming out from under each eye that resembles a whisker

Little Mao is also responsible for naming and introducing us to Bluey. Not the Australian cattle dog you might be thinking of, but instead a giant blue Suanni. Bluey, aka Lingyuan, is one of the three Adepti friends who helped save the people during the Archon War.

Gaming's suanni companion, Man Chai, floating in the air as Gaming pets his head. Man Chai has a dark brown body that glows red with a fire like ambiance. His head resembles a mask and has lines of green and yellow that glow.

So what is a Suanni? It’s a Chinese lion-dragon mythical figure dating back to the Ming dynasty. But Bee tells us Lingyuan isn’t the only living Suanni in the game. It turns out that Man Chai, Gaming’s little companion, is a Suanni youngling.

Changsheng, a small white snake with yellow eyes. She is shown in a 2D art style curled around herself on a stone surface in the shade of a tree with pink flowers in the background.

The one Adepti friend we don’t meet in the Chenyu Vale story is Herblord. Well, not technically. But we’re able to make the connection that Herblord is Changsheng, Baizhu’s snake friend. It’s pretty clear from the Changsheng cutscene that she is the Herblord, but they leave a sliver of doubt in the story.

Genshin Impact's Paimon and a movie kamera. In front of her on the table is a blank postcard and a brown Kamera her hands. Her eyes are closed and she is laughing. In front of her on the table is a blank postcard and a brown Kamera.

Here are some helpful links if you’re unfamiliar with the pop culture references we mentioned during the episode. Bluey is an Australian cartoon that has captured Feens’ heart. Our ‘jazz hands’ references are thanks to dance legend Bob Fosse. Ursula is the villain in The Little Mermaid. Lastly, 50 First Dates is the Sandler/Barrymore amnesia movie mentioned.
