Episode 142: Moon Gazing

SEASON EIGHT

Our team provides travelers with visual and video aids every episode to help them better understand comparisons, learn more about topics, and follow what we’re discussing. While we strive to include links to official Genshin Impact resources, some may also be to third-party channels.

Below are some resources surrounding this episode about the Moon Gazing quest series that may be helpful to understand the talking points and lore better:

A towering structure shines with golden light beneath a huge blue celestial body, illuminating a barren lunar landscape with distant ruins and pillars.

If you’re looking for some extra backstory and lore to help you follow along with Moon Gazing, check out these previous episodes: Ochkanatlan (E112), Adventures with Little One (E118), Nod-Krai So Far (E122), Nod-Krai, the Battle with Rerir (E125), Nod-Krai, Moon Prayer Night (E127), and Nod-Krai’s New Moon (E129).

Ninnin appears as a glowing, translucent white Kuuhenki with long, flowing appendages, star-like speckles, and a bright light where her face would be.

Once we realize that the Columbina we’ve been traveling with isn’t actually Columbina, our little friend transforms into a black Kuuhenki, not unlike the ones we’ve seen in Nod-Krai. After tricking us, she earns herself a new nickname from Paimon: “bad egg,” aka. Eggie! We later learn that her real name is Ninnin.

Two screenshots of a futuristic spacecraft interior, showing a monumental mechanical structure with glowing blue and gold details surrounded by mist.

Feens has mom issues, in case you couldn’t tell from the fact that she saw a disappointed-mom face in the spaceship. Do you see it, too?

A large, pale stone waypoint with angular, dragon-like features and glowing blue and gold panels floats above a circular platform on the moon.

Bee points out the very dragon-like waypoints we see up on the moon. It’s nice to see that they look different from the ones we’re used to seeing in Teyvat!

The Sky Mount space elevator, viewed from below, with a tall white and gold structure, blue-lit central lift, and curved architectural supports.

Feens’s dreams have come true! We finally get to see a space elevator, aka the Sky Mount.

Ungien’s Circle, a fantastical landscape of floating cliffs, tall rock pillars, orange-red trees, and smaller blue trees beneath a turquoise sky.

At first, Ungien’s Circle looks like a desolate area, but once we enter, it transforms into a bountiful, beautiful land.

Two small, glowing Kuuhenki wearing matching pale blue and white hats stand in front of a large rounded rock opening.

In Ungien’s Circle, we meet some more black Kuuhenki, but this time they’re wearing hats! They’re adorable, and they need our help.

The blonde Traveler and Paimon encounter a red deer with branching antlers beside a dark doorway in a stone structure.

During our attempts to get onto the space elevator, we find a deer by a door who needs our help finding his friend, who’s stuck on the other side. A space elevator ride and a happy deer. What more could you ask for?

A screenshot from the Sky Mount elevator ride. Looking back at Teyvat.

On the elevator, we got some spectacular views of both the moon and the Earth, and Tif could not stop taking photos!

Maagees-Geti, a giant luminous blue Kuuhenki with broad, wing-like appendages, floats against a dark, star-filled background.

The giant Kuuhenki floating around the sky are Maggie & Ungie, aka Maagees-Geti and Bad-Uru-Namu-Ungien! Ungie is a little pissy, so try not to get in his way.

Screenshot of the dragon researchers’ ancient weapon, discussed in the episode as resembling the Death Star.

The dragon researchers’ ancient weapon is giving serious Death Star vibes, and getting through it is a pain thanks to those giant lasers!

The Traveler and Columbina look up at a towering, pale, masked dragon-like figure with glowing green details against a starry black background.

At the core of the Death Star, we find a masked dragon. As she relays her message, we learn that we’re listening to a recording of Nin-Kiggia, who goes by Ninnin!

Eggie sends her final transmission and disappears,

After considering all the options, we let Eggie make the decision for herself, knowing that her choice could have unfortunate consequences. We listen as she delivers her final speech – or final transmission – and then she disappears, leaving only her hat behind.

Bye-bye, Eggie. Here are some snacks from Paimon.

A tray of food rests on a futuristic platform beneath a blue holographic symbol, with a large blue celestial body visible in the distance.

The bombshell at the end of the quest comes in the form of a message, and of course, it happens right after we walk away! We learn that the Traveler and their sibling heard a transmission from Project Moongazer, and they were responding to it. And yes, it’s approximately 72 seconds long, just as Feens hoped!

Side Quest

A gameplay tutorial titled “Ungie” shows the Traveler facing a giant blue Kuuhenki, with a close-up of the creature in flight in the right panel.

Helping Maagees-Geti fight Ungien as a giant Kuuhenki is very reminiscent of the mechanics from our first Stormterror fight. Even the little ulcers on their backs look familiar!

Large, twisting blue moonlight vines spread across ancient ruins and rocky ground in a pale turquoise environment.

Ungien’s Circle has a lot of moonlight vines, some of which we need to break through. It’s another mechanic that feels very reminiscent of a different area in the game: the underwater areas of Fontaine.

A Genshin Impact gameplay screenshot shows the achievement “6EQUJ5” unlocked, with the player character standing on a futuristic platform.

The real-life Wow! signal, 6EQUJ5, inspired the name of an in-game achievement you can earn during the quest. It’s a fun connection to the real-world radio signal detected in 1977, which lasted 72 seconds!

Here are some helpful links if you’re unfamiliar with the IRL references we mentioned during the episode. Feens tells us about Brittany Broski’s YouTube show Royal Court and Marcelo Hernández’s Minions. Bee sings us “Rock It (To the Moon)” from RuPaul. All this talk of going to the moon makes us think of Gru from Despicable Me, Dr. Evil’s moon base from Austin Powers, and Jackie Gleason’s iconic The Honeymooners line: “To the moon, Alice!” Feens reminded us that Kirby likes to suck things up. Bee tells us about the Apple TV series Invasion, and Tif compares the moon laser to Starkiller Base from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
