Tales of Teyvat, a Genshin Lore Podcast

Episode 56: Azhdaha

SEASON THREE

Every episode our team will work to provide you with visual and video aids to help you better understand comparisons and what we’re talking about.

Below are some resources surrounding what we discussed about Azhdaha that may be helpful to better understand this week’s lore:

Azhdaha, from Genshin Impact, a dragon from Liyue, Teyvat. He is a brown and gold lizard looking creature with glowing red eyes. He is crouching down looking menacingly at the camera.

As shown on the site for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

The Geo-Dragon of Liyue, Azhdaha. This massive stone looking dragon has started to become disfigured while trapped underground, taking on the look of the Ley Line roots that surround him.

Al's pet gecko named after the weekly boss Azhdaha from Genshin Impact. The yellow lizards head sticks out from a bundle of green leaves. It has brown eyes with a black slit down the center.

As shown on the site for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

A less frightful Azhdaha, although perhaps just as ferocious. Al’s pet gecko makes an appearance in our weekly recording photo. Be sure to follow us on Instagram and X/Twitter for a look into how we record Tales of Teyvat.

The Dragon-Queller tree that signifies the location of Azhdaha in Liyue. It is an old and windy tree that sits on a small green hill with a grey mountain behind it. The end of the tree's branches glow blue, looking like coral, and that blue color weaves through the rest of the brown bark of the tree.

As shown on the site for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

The Dragon-Queller sure does sound like the name of a bad-ass sword, but it’s actually the name of a bad-ass tree in Liyue. A large tree entwined with blue crystal that marks the place where Azhdaha is trapped underground.

Map of Liyue where the Dragon-Queller tree and the Azhdaha weekly boss fight are located. The tree is shown in a circle pop out and arrow points to its exact location on the map.

As shown on the site for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

The Dragon-Queller is off to the right of Mt Hulao in the western side of Liyue. It’s also the area where you access the domain to fight Azhdaha.

Map of Liyue showing a design that resembles a boob. The map is darkened except for a circle that shows a small mountain with a brown spot resembling a boob and nipple.

Tif points out a familiar shape off to the right side of Dragon-Queller… a boob. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. You’re welcome.

The various vishaps from Liyue in Genshin Impact. Shown are the Primo Geovishap (top right), the standard Vishap (middle left) and the Geovishap Hatchling (bottom left). Each creature stands on its back legs, has a long tale, and has brown and gold detailing. The Hatchling is the smallest, and least scary, and they each get bigger and scarier, with the Primo Geovishap being the largest and scariest.

As shown on the site for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

While there are many types of vishaps around Teyvat, there are three predominant ones in Liyue – the Primo Geovishap (aka the vishap-ashop), the Vishap (aka the Pokemon), and the Geovishap Hatchling (aka the stone version of Sonic).

Jiu, an event-only NPC from the Azhdaha storyline in Genshin Impact. This fragment of Azhdaha looks like a small blue-haired child. It wears glasses and angles its head downward, looking up at us through its bangs.

As shown on the site for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

There’s nothing more frightening then a child, amirite? This blue-haired, spectacled demon child is the angry side of the ying-yang of Azhdaha. During Zhongli’s second story quest, she lures a group of miners to the Dragon-Queller tree to dig out a cave to the golden veil that is holding back Azzy.

Kun Jun, an NPC from Liyue in Genshin Impact that becomes an essential part of the Azhdaha storyline. Kun Jun has dark hair that goes down to he base of his next. He wears black glasses and looks angry off to the left, his mouth slightly open as if he's going to say something.

As shown on the site for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

Kun Jun is a talented blacksmith from Liyue that gets possessed by the other, nicer, fragment of Azhdaha. This side is less angry and still has allegiance to his old friend, Morax.

Hercules (left) confronting a dragon (right). This image is done in what looks like a pencil sketch style on a brown piece of paper.

As shown on the site for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

Al talks about the connections of Heracles (aka Hercules) and Rostam to the story of Azhdaha and Zhongli. While in the former story a dragon is killed, that is luckily not the case with our stony friends.

Morax, the Geo Archon of Teyvat in Genshin Impact from a in-game cut scene describing the history of Azhdaha the dragon. Morax is shown in a 2D art rendering, his face covered by shadows and his hair. He wears a hood over his head and has his arms out reached with a brown spiral in front of him. Golden ornaments decorate the image.

As shown on the site for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

At the end of Zhongli’s story quest we get to see a great cutscene that goes thru the full story of Rex Lapis (Morax) and Azhdaha’s friendship.

Artist Spotlight

Fan art of Azhdaha and Zhongli fighting together by Aura (@aura_draws). Zhongli stands in front, with his hand out, creating a golden geo symbol. He wears his white archon outfit with his hood up, his eyes glow gold as he makes a serious face. Behind him, Azhdaha rages with his eyes glowing red and his mouth wide open showing off his teeth.

There are so many talented & creative people in the Genshin community, and we’d like to spread some love to a wonderful artist – Aura (@aura_draws). While we don’t get to see Azhdaha and Zhongli go into battle together in the game, we’re pretty sure Aura has depicted it spot on! All of their artwork looks as if it’s frozen a moment in time during a movement. And if you’ve followed our spotlights long enough you know, we’re suckers for great eyes that pull your attention and connect you to the piece.
