Episode 79: The Melusines and Zaddy Elynas

SEASON FOUR

Every episode our team provides travelers with visual and video aids to help better understand comparisons, learn more about topics, and follow what we’re discussing. While we strive to include links to official Genshin Impact resources, some may also be to third-party channels.

Below are some resources surrounding this episode about the Melusines and Zaddy Elynas that may be helpful to understand the talking points and lore better:

A pile of goo in the ruins of the Narzissenkreuz Institute. The goo pile is centered under a lamp is is purple with black and purple ooze around it. There is a grand stone stair case behind it leading up to a gorgeous and detailed stone and glass door with green and yellow detailing. There are white pillars, some broken, surrounding the goo that sits on a stone floor.

As we mentioned, we talked about the Melusines back in our Narzissenkreuz Saga episode. Especially when it came to Mamere. It’s not a required prerequisite, but you can hear Bee get mad at all the goop talk.

The phantom version of the Sponsian boat in the water of Fontaine. It is a light blue color and slightly sea through as it sits at the bottom of the sea surrounded by seaweed and fish.

Also related to the Narzissenkreuz story, we talk about the phantom boat that Ahes is studying. This boat is half of the Sponsian, the boat that was lunged into Elynas’ body and helped lead to his death.

Visual of the remnants of Elynas on the Beryl Region of Fontaine shown as a Gif. The areas that are Elynas' body slow fade to a white color to easily show them on the green map.

Elynas was huge. His remains take up most of the island of the Beryl Region of Fontaine. If you look at your map, you can see his skeleton in the rock formations.

Comparison of a Melusine from Fontaine and an Aranara from Sumeru. The Aranara, shown on the left, is short and has a light green body with a darker green circle on its abdomen. It has long leaf pieces on its hair that go down its head, resembling hair and has two smaller leaves poking out of its head like antennas. The Melusine, shown on the right, wears a Garde uniform that is blue and a Garde hat. They have blue hair and purple, blue and white fur.

Tif calls the Melusines the Aranara of Fontaine and likens them to the “it” creature from each Star Wars movie. If given the choice, which would you buy? A sea slug or a talking plant?

Breacher Primus, a floating orbs composed of purple and grey flat rock fragments. In the center is a glowing purple spiked ball.

Along with the Melusines, Elynas is also responsible for creating the Breacher Primuses. Since they look like DNA floating around, it’s fitting that they were made from his cells. While they go off script quite a bit, their main purpose is to protect the Melusines. Tell that to poor Carole.

Carole the Melusine from Neuvillette's Story Quest shown in a Sepia tone. While we can tell her coloring, we can see she is wearing a police uniform. Imposed on the image is the emblem of the Gardes, a gold and blue emblem that has two mermaids back to back, two ornaments that look like a judgement scale and other detailing.

Carole is the Melusine we learn about in Neuvillette’s Story Quest. She was one of the first to join the Marechaussee Phantom and helped protect the people of Fontaine. That is, until some jerks framed her for murder. In the end, her sacrifice did help the Melusines and her likeness is shown on the emblem of the current Gardes’ hats.

Merusea Village which is shown in a cave with green leafy vines hanging down in a weeping willow way. There are a few buildings in the cave that resemble seashells and have pink, yellow, white and red hues. The village itself is shown from afar. It looks mysterious and magical.

While you will see the Melusines out and about in Fontaine, their home is close to Zaddy Elynas. They live in Merusea Village, an area underground in the Beryl Region. They have cute little homes and live in all different parts of the caves. Of the 46 known Melusines, you can meet 18 of them down in that area.

Sigewinne shown in a green/blue bottle in a 2D cutscene from the game. Sigewinne, however, has a normal Melusine face with blue and white fur, instead of her human face. She looks sad and younger.

One Melusine we meet outside of Mearusea Village is sweet baby Sigewinne. As the resident head nurse of the Fortress of Meropide, we met her in the second installment of the Fontaine story along with her BFF, Wriothesley. While we don’t get into her story too much in this episode, we talk about why she looks different from the other Melusines. You can hear how she came to have human traits in her Story Quest cutscene.

Poissonchant Pie. It looks like a regular pie in a pie dish except there are seven fish heads with eyes that pop out of it. there are a few decorative green leaves in the center.

Poissonchant Pie doesn’t look very appetizing, but when Puca, Canotila, and Verenata make it for Serene, we actually say it’s pretty yummy. It’s not the first time we’ve encountered some unusual Melusine cuisine either. Sigewinne makes some weirdly colored dishes in the Fortress for prisoners needing an extra boost.

Melusine Canotila has a blonde bob with bangs that allows her pink ears to peak out from her temples. She has a pink and white coloring to her, yellow eyes, and wears a light long sleeve blue dress with a red turtle neck underneath it.

Canotila is one of our favorite Melusines. She’s witchy and high AF. She’s also part of the Book Revealing quest, which is also pretty trippy. Along with some other oddities, she sees Paimon as a balloon floating with an upside string and the Traveler as a monster that could gobble up the world.

A purple summoning circle glows on a blue ground with a music stand in the middle holding an open book. Behind the summoning circle we see a desk with a Melusine standing behind it. Behind the Melusine is a bookshelf full of potions.

The Book of Revealing quest involves an enigmatic book written by Rene, originally hidden in the walls of Elynas and found by Canotila. You can start this quest by first talking to Canotila in Merusea Village.

Azathoth and Nyarlathotep, demons from H.P. Lovecraft lore. Shown on the left is Nyarlathotep a brown creature that walks on tentacle like legs with many smaller tentacles making up its midsection and cone shaped head. It has two arms, tentacles coming off randomly on its body and a large mouth that is open with teeth. Azathoth is shown on the right as basically a giant mouth with lots of sharp and large teeth. There are small eyes on it and tentacles as well, connected to the blob like body attached to the mouth. there are many tinier mouths also attached to it.

Feens ties in some HP Lovecraft lore with the creatures Azathoth and Nyarlathotep. If you’d like to chat more about this fascinating comparison with Feens, come join our Discord server, Shades of Teyvat.

Pashiv, the Melusine, and a vishap. Pashiv is in the front of the image. She wears a light blue cloth dress that is sleeveless, has a darker blue collar, and a purple belt tied around her waist. She has piercing hot pink eyes on a white face with blue accents, hair, and ears. Her arms are blue with a lighter blue design on the underneath. Behind her a purple and blue Vishap, a dragon es creature. It stands on all fours with piercing hot pink eyes.

Pashiv is a Melsuine…Vishap? We’re not entirely sure what she is. Her name spelled backwards is Vishap, and she has a friend Vishap. And she doesn’t live in Merusea Village. This little one is an enigma. Plus she wants you to find a whole bunch of branches for her.

Painting made by Mamere on a canvas. The painting shows Paimon, seymour the Meka dog, Mamere the Melusine, and Lumine. The art style is simple but colorful. The canvas sits on a wooden easel in a cave with a starfish sitting by one of its legs.

After you’ve completed the Mamere and Narzissenkreuz stories, be sure to go back to her house in Merusea Village. There you’ll find the painting she made of us. And unlike her other paintings, this one is actually really good! You’ll even get a version you can display in your Serenitea Pot.

Lanoire and Caterpillar in both his human and hilichurl forms. On the far left is Lanoire, a child NPC with blonde hair pulled back in two braids, blue eyes, and a purple dress with a white ruffle collar and pink bow at her neck. Behind her is human Caterpillar, a child NPC with white hair and black eyes. He has black hands that bleed into his forearms. He wears a green short sleeve sweater that is buttoned up with a white shirt underneath it. He also wears purple shorts. Behind him is an Anemo Hilichurl Rogue. This is a taller hilichurl that has green hair, a green cape, and stands taller then the children.

Another cute followup after completing a quest involves our friend Caterpillar. Once you’ve completed the Book of Revealing, you’ll be able to spin off this quick journey with Caterpillar and Lanoire while she celebrates her birthday.

Genshin Impact's Paimon and a movie kamera. In front of her on the table is a blank postcard and a brown Kamera her hands. Her eyes are closed and she is laughing. In front of her on the table is a blank postcard and a brown Kamera.

Here are some helpful links if you’re unfamiliar with the pop culture references we mentioned during the episode. This episode we mentioned two songs – OPP from Naughty by Nature and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds from The Beatles.
