Tales of Teyvat, a Genshin Lore Podcast

Episode 33: Arataki Itto and the Arataki Gang

SEASON TWO

Every episode our team will work to provide you with visual and video aids to help you better understand comparisons and what we’re talking about.

Below are some resources surrounding what we discussed about Arataki Itto and the Arataki Gang that may be helpful to better understand this week’s lore:

A 2D design from Genshin Impact showcasing a blue and red oni. The blue oni has blue skin, horns, and dark blue hair that covers one of their yellow eyes. The red oni has blonde hair, red skin, and horns with red eyes. They stand in front of a hut with a straw roof. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

During Itto’s story quest we learn the story of the blue oni and the red oni. It gives us some insight into why we don’t see many blue onis in Teyvat.

Granny Oni, an NPC from Genshin Impact, looks off screen at someone. She has white hair tied back, white eyebrows and glasses. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

Granny Oni, who is not in fact an oni, took in Itto after his parents died and he was living on the streets. She is listed as an official member of the Arataki Gang, even though to her, there’s no gang – just Itto hanging out with his friends and having fun.

A traditional Japanese painting of the Oni in folklore. It has three characters, an Oni that is scary with long hair and flame coming out of its mouth and know samurais. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

The oni is a popular creature in Japanese folklore. They are depicted as a type of demon or orc and said to live in caves or deep under mountains. They’re not as happy-go-lucky as our oni, but they are said to have superhuman strength which is a trait Itto shares.

Two purple beetles with white horns stare each other down ready to battle while sitting on a rock. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

Itto’s favorite pastime is having beetle battles with anyone who will take him on. Whether the Traveler or kids in the village, he will challenge them all. Onikabuto beetles are found on all but two islands in Inazuma, so don’t waste your time farming on Watatsumi or Tsurumi Islands.

Paimon, from Genshin Impact, floats staring at the camera. Behind her is Itto, an Oni with horns and no shirt. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

Any time Paimon and Itto are together you can expect a laugh. They are always going at each other and we love it! Wonder where they came up with their nicknames? Watch the clip below from the “Perilous Trail” event from 2.7.

Itto, from Genshin Impact, reaches out with his hand as if he is trying to save someone or reach for the reader. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

During the final cutscene of Itto’s story quest, we see him save the blue oni in a cinematic action scene.

Ushi, from Genshin Impact, is a brown cow creature with golden horns and designs. It wears the roof of a house on its back as a shield. It is bouncing in the Gif, in an almost dance like fashion. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

They might not come up too often in this episode, but there’s no denying that Ushi is absolutely adorable. The reason for Paimon’s nickname of ‘bull-chucker’ makes sense since Itto is actually chucking a bull. Ushi’s not just their name, its also the gender-neutral word for cow/bull in Japanese.

A close up on Snow White and depicted in Shrek 2. She has her mouth open to sing but looks enraged. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

Feens makes a Shrek reference during the episode and we thought you all needed to enjoy it for yourselves.
