Tales of Teyvat, a Genshin Lore Podcast

Episode 48: Sayu and the Shuumatsuban

SEASON THREE

Every episode our team will work to provide you with visual and video aids to help you better understand comparisons and what we’re talking about.

Below are some resources surrounding what we discussed about Sayu and the Shuumatsuban that may be helpful to better understand this week’s lore:

Sayu, from Genshin Impact, kneels close to the ground ready to fight. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

Our first introduction to the itty bitty ninja comes from her character demo. Check it out before she goes back to her nap.

Sayu, from Genshin Impact, ponders her thoughts with a finger to her motuh. Behind her there are purple trees. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

In her Collected Miscellany we get to see her spying on some shrine maidens while she hides in disguise. As an added bonus, we get to hear Dainsleif saying silly words.

Sayu, from Genshin Impact, is being carried on Lumine's back as she sleeps. The sun is setting behind them. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

If you haven’t done Sayu’s hangout or you want a refresher, YouTuber GamingWithAbyss has the entire event with all choices on their YouTube channel. Plus you get some of the cutest photos.

Sayu, from Genshin Impact, in her muji-muji daruma form. It makes her look like an egg with a raccoon like face hidden behind a brown and black wrapping. There is a leaf on top of it. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

One of Sayu’s disguises is of her Muji-Muji Daruma, the same helper she uses in her Elemental Burst. And Tif would also like you to know that you can get the daruma for your Serenitea Pot.

Frozen's Wandering Oaken looks excitingly at the camera with his hands together in front of him. He has a bookshelf behind him. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

While chatting about the Yoohoo Art, Feens nails it with her reference to Frozen’s Wandering Oaken’s big summer blowout.

The Fortress of Meropide, from Genshin Impact, as seen from the water. It is bronze with spotlights in a blue sea. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

The palace of…metro-pie? melo-pie? metropolis? or is it the palace of marmalade?

Feens’ has renamed the Fortress of Meropide so many times this episode that we didn’t even think to remind her that its a fortress and not a palace.

What are your favorite Feens-isms?

Inu Shoushou, a ninja dog character in Genshin Impact, sits on the beach wearing a headband, a black shirt with a blue sweater, and wrappings on its paws. It has a scar on one eye and looks off camera while the sun sets behind them. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

One of the active Shuumatsuban that we know of is Inu Shoushou, a red Shiba Inu with a scar across his eye. This good boy still goes to the shores of Kondo Village nightly waiting for his owner to return. A return that sadly will never happen.

Moyomo of the Shuumatsuban, from Genshin Impact, wears an eyepatch and a purple kimono. She has short black hair with bangs and has her arms in front of her, with one touching her chin. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

Oh look, a character with an eye-patch. 🙂

Moyomo is another active Shuumatsuban ninja that is now known as Chitose. But was also known previously as Gendou Ringo, a shrine maiden.

We meet her in the story when we accidentally used a secret code made by her previous partner, Momoka.

Hishashi of the Shuumatsuban, from Genshin Impact, stands looking at the camera with his hand over his heart as he talks. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

Hishashi is the last of the Shuumatsuban ninjas that we’ve encountered in Teyvat. He shows up as a right-hand man to boss Ayato during, as Tif would call it, the most boringest quest of the entire game – Ayato’s Story Quest.

Do you have a quest that bored you to annoyance?

Taroumaru, from Genshin Impact, is a ninja dog with black and yellow features. It wears a straw hat, has a sword wrapped in its tail, and has red guards on its ankles. It is sitting looking at the camera angrily. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

A retired Shuumatsuban ninja, Taroumaru now owns and runs the Komore Tea House. Not two shabby for blade pup, or is it hat dog? (it’s blade pup)

If you participated in The Clash of the Lone Blades during the 2022 Iridori Festival, you received Taroumaru for your Serenitea Pot after defeating him.

A close up of Kamisato Ayato, from Genshin Immpact. He looks down and off camera and looks sad. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

As the boss of the Shuumatsuban, Kamisato Ayato is in charge of sending out the ninjas on their secret missions. Including one that is out of character and apparently for his sister, as seen in his character demo.

Kano Nana, from Genshin Impact, stands looking at the camera with her hands held in front of her hidden by the sleeves of her kimono, which is read and white. She has brown bangs and short hair Shikanoin Heizou is imposed to the right of her, standing and looking at the camera. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

Kano Nana is charged with keeping an eye out on our lil baby Sayu and making sure she doesn’t get herself into any troubling situations. And shows up for work.

A fun fact about Nana is that she is a cousin to the Tenryou Commission detective Shikanoin Heizou.

A photo of Chongyun and Lumine, from Genshin Impact, hangs on a wall behind a purple covered bed on an off white wall. This hangs in the Serenitea Pot. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

Since Tif has talked non-stop about the Serenitea Pot in this episode, we thought we’d also show you the frame she mentioned you could craft to put your hangout photos in.

You can buy the blueprint for the furnishing “Lingering Moment” from Tubby. Once you hang it on your wall, you can choose any of your Hangout Memories to display.

A tanuki (left) vs a munjin (right. They are both brown and black creatures that are furry and cute. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

Sayu is not a tanuki. She’s not a munjin either, but the costume her sensei gave her is. As Al argues in the episode, there is some crossover between the two animals. But according the to the official text, Sayu is the Munjin Ninja.

And she’ll bite you if you call her a tanuki.

Hands clapping covered in black with red and black painted tails and silver decor and rings. This image is showcased on the website for Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast.

We briefly mention Arlecchino’s “hilihands” at the end of the episode. No one knows for sure why her hands are black, but we are sure there’s a story behind it. Is it frost-bite? Were her hands burned in a fire? Only time will tell.

The cutest ninja around.

There are so many talented & creative people in the Genshin community, and we’d like to spread some love to a wonderful artist – Aluli (@alustrations). This traditional watercolor of Sayu captures all her cuteness in a gorgeous soft tone. We love the colors in this piece and the inquisitiveness in her eyes – a beautiful trait seen throughout all of Aluli’s work!
