Episode 68: The Sunchildren of Enkanomiya

SEASON FOUR

Every episode our team provides travelers with visual and video aids to help better understand comparisons, learn more about topics, and follow what we’re discussing. While we strive to include links to official Genshin Impact resources, some may also be to third-party channels.

Below are some resources surrounding this episode about the Sunchildren of Enkanomiya that may be helpful to better understand the talking points and lore:

the island of Watatsumi In the Inazuma nation in Genshin Impact. It has a main section with giant pink coral and sea shells surrounded by mist and bubbles.

If you are unfamiliar with Enkanomiya, it is located beneath Watatsumi Island. Its entrance is deep within a whirlpool outside of the Sangonomiya Shrine. Quests to enter the area start when you speak with a shrine maiden outside the shrine itself.

Genshin Impact's Enjou, holding a blue glowing flower in its mouth. Enjou is a monster, made of shades of red, orange and brown with a brown spikey helmet that covers its head.

You may know this by now, but in case you don’t… we love Enjou – or, more specifically, “The Thing Calling Itself Enjou.” And we’re apparently not alone! On White Day (a day one month after Valentine’s Day when people reciprocate gifts), Genshin gave us art with Enjou, who is giving us a rose he has clutched in his teeth. It was ridiculous and fantastic, and we want more!

A seven layer dip in a small glass bowl. The bottom layer is brown (refried beans), then the layers moving up are green (guacamole), white (sour cream), red (salsa), and then it is topped with a mix of cheese, chives, and black olives. There is a chip sticking out of the dip. Super imposed on the image is a chibi of Paimon saying "Yum"

Teyvat exists in a kind of seven-layer dip, but Feens can get down with this one. As Bee mentions, there are three main layers: Light, Human, and Abyss Realms.

Book cover of "Before Sun and Moon". It is a grey book, that is almost identical to a stone slate. It has some lighter grey and gold cracks in it.

‘Before Sun and Moon’ is the second volume in the Byakuyakoku Collection – which you receive by completing one of the Enkanomiya world quests. It focuses on Istaroth’s influence on the land, where she is referred to as “the moment.” Bee would like to note that the text says, “She was the moment,” but we like his version better: she IS the moment.

Dainichi Mikoshi in Enkanomiya, Inazuma, Teyvat. This structure in Genshin Impact is seen from below, as if you're looking up at it. It is grey, with gold embellishments. There is water running through the center and a light emitting from the top.

Dainichi Mikoshi plays a large part in the story of the Sunchildren. Since this is Genshin, it has multiple names: Dainichi Mikoshi, Hyperion, Helios, and Byakuya no Hikari. Aberaku created the device to ward off the Bathysmal Vishaps after receiving the blueprints from Istaroth. The nobles then decided to use it to deep-fry babies.

Size comparison of Bathysmal Vishaps to sinshades in Enkanomiya. The giant blue Vishap and its twin purple Vishap, dragon like monsters in Teyvat, stand next to one another yelling. In front of them is a ghost or sinshade. There is a yellow measuring stick next to the sinshade showing its height. Next to the Vishaps is a much taller yellow measuring stick, showcasing the height difference.

We chat about the size of the Bathysmal Vishaps after Al calls them ankle-biters. She’s not wrong when you measure their annoyance level, but we’re pretty confident they were much larger than the Byakuyakoku people. If you compare the twins below the Dainichi Mikoshi to the Sinshades (Shades of Tokoyo), they’re probably nearly double in size.

The lightbulb god, aka Dainichi Mikoshi. A white Phillips lightbulb from the real world. Above it is a cartoon crown.

It seems we forgot to list one more name for the Dainichi Mikoshi – Philips, the lightbulb god. After all, the Dainichi Mikoshi truly is a glorified lightbulb. And it’s just as ridiculous to worship a lightbulb as it is to worship Helios.

Soul Guide Locus in Enkanomiya. It is a floating stone platform in the shape of a triangle. It floats in a sea of mist and has a small glowing light blue triangle in the middle.

Feens describes the Soul Guide Locus as a semi-see-through sparkly triangle with sparkly water paths. We use these pretty paths to locate the Sinshades of the Sunchildren and essentially set their souls free. After interacting with each Sunchild, they disappear and hopefully finally find some peace.

Triangle-shaped rock that is the Divine Bridle. It is three dimensional and has a light green crystal bottom point. The rest of it is grey, with a small triangle platform on top of it that has green line work as decoration.

The Divine Bridle is a triangle-shaped rock crystal that signifies the Sunchildren’s authority. We use it along with Clymene’s memories to help free the Sunchildren. Clymene was one of the nannies and felt enormous guilt that she could not help the Sunchildren back then. After freeing their souls, her ghost also dissipates.

The Evernight Temple in Enkanomiya as shown on the Teyvat map, where the Sunchildren's sinshades are located. The location of each sunshade is marked by a white flag with an exclamation mark in the middle.

Al explains the correlation between the Sunchildren and Apollo’s children in Greek mythology. She also describes a traditional Crete dance in which people dance in the shape of a crescent moon – the same shape in which the locations of the Sunchildren can be found.

Genshin Impact's Paimon and a movie kamera. Paimon has her elbows on a wooden table and is holding her head with her hands. Her eyes are closed and she is laughing. In front of her on the table is a blank postcard and a brown Kamera.

Here are some helpful links if you’re unfamiliar with the movies, music, or books we mentioned during the episode. Feens mentioned the band Marianas Trench, which Tif confused with the song Mary on a Cross. Tif talked about the original Riddick movie, Pitch Black. Feens told us the premise of the book/movie Dark Places, while Al brought up The Lighthouse.

Genshin Impact fanart of the Sunchildren of Enkanomiya by Sora Timestill. It shows a young blonde boy, holding a staff while standing on a breaking and glowing rock. There is sadness in the boys eyes as the white billowy sleeves of his shirt flow behind him. There is a glow coming from behind.

Letters from Afar

Questions and comments delivered weekly by Kirara and the Komaniya Express

Kirara from Genshin Impact standing next to a wooden mailbox and a squirrel. There are two letters imposed next to her and she stands on a stone patio with grass and a pink sky behind her.

Thank you to fellow travelers Kendon, Maria & Zell for writing in. We truly appreciate your questions and comments! If you’d like to send us mail via the Komaniya Express, reach out on our Instagram, X/Twitter, or email. We’d love to hear from you! And Kirara could use the work.

Tales of Teyvat hosts favorite places. Each corner shows a hosts chibi character and behind them is the location they would stay. Al, top left, shows Aaru Village, the color of sand with different shaped buildings built into a cliff side. Top right is Bee, showing the blue tones court of Fontaine. Bottom left is Feens in a court yard in Mondstadt with a fountain. Bottom right is Tif surrounded by the purple trees of Inazuma.

Kendon asked our hosts where they would choose to live if they were in Teyvat. Tif quickly answered Amakane Island, Feens chose everyone’s first home of Mondstadt, Al surprised us with Aaru Village, and Bee would live in the Court of Fontaine for their good public transit but summer over at Fischl’s mansion in the Golden Apple Archipelago.

Scaramouche and the Fatui Harbingers from Arlecchino's anime short. Everyone is wearing their traditional Harbinger coats - long white coats, buttoned up, with the hood down. Everyone but Scaramouche, who wears the coat open, showing off his shorts. He wears the hood up, which seems to be what's keeping the coat on him.

Maria asked our thoughts about the implications of Scaramouche being shown in Arlecchino’s short ‘The Song Burning in the Embers’ and what that means about her origins. And in true ToT fashion, we talked about the shorts. Feens discussed Zell’s comment about the multiple names given to the Harbingers, and their coats.
