Episode 120: Dainsleif & The Loom of Fate

For a character who only appears once a year, we certainly hear a lot from Dainsleif. For most characters, he’s the narrator of their Collected Miscellany videos. Which means we get to enjoy hearing the incomparable Yuri Lowenthal (English VA) more often than we actually see Dains.

If you haven’t gone back to watch the original storyline trailer, we highly recommend you do! Hindsight is always 20/20, but that doesn’t make it any less cool to see how long ago they started dropping hints.

While we don’t have separate episodes (yet) of all the Dainsleif Archon Quests, we do have episodes for The Chasm (Chapter II) and Caribert’s first appearance (Chapter III). Should we cover the other Dains’ quests too?

Speaking of the Chasm, it’s during the second chapter, Requiem of the Echoing Depths, that we meet Halfdan and the Black Serpent Knights. This is our first real look into Dains’ position in Khaenri’ah before its collapse. We see the people he led and the sacrifices they were willing to make for him.

In the fifth chapter of the storyline, A Space and Time for You, we meet Direidyth and learn about the hibernation chamber we were in – something even Paimon knew about, but we had no memory of. Did you give her the chamber key willingly, or were you forced to hand it over like Feens?

In the first chapter of the storyline, We Will Be Reunited, we get an awesome teaser video that shows our sibling for the first time and that they were absent during the Cataclysm.

Struggling to say Vedrfolnir’s name? Don’t fret, just call him the Dark Crystal or Bee’s new favorite – Eddie Vedder. Veddie might not be the better man, but he is Dains’ older brother and one of the Five Sinners of Khaenri’ah.

Our first encounter with Dainsleif is at the home of the ToTs, in Angel’s Share. Before we start our journey to the defiled statue with him, he sasses us up with some questions and compares us to his previous traveling companion (aka, our sibling).

Seeing our sibling for the first time in the story was really exciting. But nothing could have prepared us for learning that they sided with the Abyss Order. It’s pretty obvious they’ve seen some stuff in the last 500 years.

In the fourth chapter of the storyline, Bedtime Story, we don’t get much time with Dainsleif – but we do get Hot Caribert. Dains was too busy holding his butt cheeks tight, trying to keep the first Field Tiller’s eye nestled in his body (or booty).

We’ve been hearing about this so-called Loom of Fate from the very beginning. But now it’s in motion. From the Fatui’s Loom of Fate operation, the Atlas of the New World was created thanks to some reconstructed Ley Lines and Dainsleif’s memories.

Just because you’re immortal doesn’t mean you’re impervious to pain. And the look on Dains’ face when the sharp hand of an Iniquitous Baptist is thrust through his chest shows it hurts just a smidge. Maybe, like Tif, he also forgot for a moment that he was immortal.

Turns out, the baddie is no regular baddie… it was Dains’ teacher and mentor, Haden! Gotta hand it to those Fatui, it was a great way to distract Dains and suck up his memories.
