Episode 70: Duke Wriothesley of Meropide

SEASON FOUR

Every episode our team provides travelers with visual and video aids to help better understand comparisons, learn more about topics, and follow what we’re discussing. While we strive to include links to official Genshin Impact resources, some may also be to third-party channels.

Below are some resources surrounding this episode about Duke Wriothesley of Meropide that may be helpful in understanding the talking points and lore better:

Wriothesley, from Genshin Impact, wearing a metal gauntlet with the first up ready to fight.

Wriothesley’s character demo video gives us a look into his fighting prowess. He takes on multiple opponents in the Pankration Ring, including some illegally altered Gardemeks. But with his mechanical gauntlets, he has no trouble winning the whole showdown.

A prolife of Wriothesley in a 2D art style, as shown in his character teaser for Genshin Impact. He smiles softly looking to the left with his visible eye closed. One of his scars peaks out from under his collar.

In his character teaser video, we see Wriothesley’s empathy for children when he ensures the child of a convict isn’t aware of their father’s crimes or destination, foreshadowing what we later learn about his own childhood.

The Duke of Meropide, Wriothesley, stands in contemplation with his right hand held up to his chin, covering his mouth. He is inside the fortress.

Wriothesley’s collected miscellany video sets up much of the lore around Meropide, even if we didn’t realize it at the time. From the ship to the Primordial Sea plug, we get a lot of goodies in that small window. And a lot of cake.

Wriothesley, from Genshin Impact, looks up during his character story. He looks sad and contemplative.

Along with the bombshell about how Wriothesley ended up in Meropide, his story quest includes the douchey Dougier and the Beret Society. Were you as surprised as Tif about how nonchalant Traveler and Paimon were about murder?

English voice actor of Wriothesley, Joe Zieja is imposed next to the duke. Joe wears a navy blue t-shirts, smiles largely at the camera, and has brown hair with a matching, trimmed, beard. Behind him, Wriothesley stands in the Fortress.

Along with a top-tier tushy, Wriothesley also wooed us with his voice. And that’s all thanks to his English voice actor, Joe Zieja. For a full meta experience, you can watch Joe play Genshin as Wriothesley on his Twitch and follow along with his Wrio cosplay progress on X/Twitter.

The foster family Wriothesley grew up in. There are two adults standing in the background, both dressed very well. The husband, or father, wears a yellow suit with many fine detailings and has brown hair that is slicked back. To his right the mother has long brown hair that is half pulled back. She wears a long blue dress with a dark blue bust and a white collar. The four children all are the same height but look different. The one on the left has dark hair and a grey vest, the one in the middle left has long hair with a blue plaid dress and yellow bow. The middle right child brown hair and a white shirt with a brown vest. The last child on the right has long black hair pulled back into two braids with a yellow dress that has a white collar and blue bow.

Wriothesley and his siblings thought they lucked out with their foster family. Then they were reminded this was Genshin, where orphans are abundant and traumatized. You can see him retell the story at the end of his story quest.

Wriothesley is punching someone off screen using his mechanical gauntlets. Wriothesley and the gauntlets shine a light blue to represent his cryo vision.

The mechanical gauntlets that Writothesley wears during combat are an invention of his own. Improving them every time he would fight in the underground pankration fights in order to continue winning. Once he was able to get better materials, they got even more impressive. At one point, they even earned the support of professionals hailing from the Fontaine Research Institute.

2D anime style designs from a HoYoFair anime short staring Wriothesley. The still from this video shows Wriothesley standing in front of Clorinde as he talks, seeming ready for a fight. Clorinde's eyes glow purple in anger behind him.

Feens mentions one of Wriothesley’s voice lines, in which he says he got his scars from fighting a sea monster. She wonders if that line had anything to do with the HoYoFair short made by animator KieruArt.

A close up of Wriothesley from Genshin Impact showing the scars on his face, neck and chest. He has a scar under his eye and three scars going up his neck.

Most of Wriothesley’s scars are covered up, and all are a mystery (at least right now). We do think, however, that they probably came from the fight he had with his foster parents before he killed them. He ended up unconscious in the hospital, so we know it had to be pretty bad.

The Primordial Sea water meter in Meropide. It is a circular stone mechanism with bronze features, like four bronze triangles that clip the stone or metal lid in place. The meter is in the middle of the lid, in bronze, and it shows the arrow of the meter in the highest location it could be.

During the first part of the archon quest in Fontaine, we learn about a mysterious meter that has recently been spiking. It turns out that the meter measures the Primordial Seawater level in the surrounding area. If that were to get too high or released, it would spell disaster for the Fontainians. In an epic cutscene, we see Wriothesley freeze the busted plug before Neuvilette shows up to put a less temporary band-aid on the situation.

Fanart of Wriothesley, Neuvillette and Sigewinne. This art style is 2D and showcases the three in a modern setting. On the left is Wriothesley, who wears black pants, a grey turtle neck sweater and black gloves. He has a messenger back slung over his shoulder and holds one of Sigewinne's hands. Sigewinne is in the middle wearing a teal and pink coat, red scarf, and yellow shirt with a brown winter hat that has bunny ears. She is holding Neuvilette's hand with her other hand. Neuvilette wears black pants, a grey turtle neck, and a long brown trench coat open. His long hair is pulled back.

Feens mentions an artist who draws Wriothesley raising Sigewinne in current-day situation when he starts dating Neuvillette. Click here to view their TikTok and be sure to let Feens know if you like them as well!

The stickers on Wriothesley's gauntlets left there by Melusines. There are two images to show two different stickers. On the left, there is a sticker sketch of a shark with Wriothesley's hair. He looks like an angry sketch of a shark with a red triangle behind him. On the right there is a sketch sticker of Sigewinne with a big smile on her face. The stickers shows her blue hair, pink and white ears and red eyes.

Wriothesley’s soft spot for Melusines started when he was a child. It started with a Melusine who would give him soup when he was out on the streets. And we just know Sigewinne has him wrapped around her little finger…err…paw? Wriothesley often finds stickers that they’ve stuck on him, including the one of a Melusine and Wrio-Shark.

The Remurian Ship being built inside Meropide. The image is dark and shrouded in shadows. The ships is large, brown with bronze details and surrounded by wooden docks, scaffolding, and pulleys.

Wriothesley sure does have a big…ship.

As the secrets of Meropide started to reveal themselves to Writothesley, he quickly found out the prophecy was imminent. In order to help out as many as he could, he had a Remurian ship built in the depths of the Fortress. To bad in the end, he only saved like 5 people with it. J/K (not really though).

Genshin Impact's Paimon and a movie kamera. In front of her on the table is a blank postcard and a brown Kamerah her hands. Her eyes are closed and she is laughing. In front of her on the table is a blank postcard and a brown Kamera.

Here are some helpful links if you’re unfamiliar with the movies or books we mentioned during the episode.

Percy Jackson is a book series that has also been made into movies. The spicy book mentioned is Neon Gods is by Katee Robert.

Artist Spotlight

Genshin Fanart of Wriothesley by Sasha (@samairu). Wriothesley is shown in a 2D sketch that looks like it may be colored in with a smoother version of colored pencils. Wriothesley is shown from the bust up, surrounded by a wreath of ice. His one eye is covered by his hair and his other eye looks seductively at the camera as he looks up. His shirt is open and unbuttoned.
