Tales of Teyvat, a Genshin Lore Podcast

Episode 57: ‘Akitsu Kimodameshi’ Event

SEASON THREE

Every episode our team will work to provide you with visual and video aids to help you better understand comparisons and what we’re talking about.

Below are some resources surrounding what we discussed about ‘Akitsu Kimodameshi’ Event that may be helpful to better understand this week’s lore:

The Genshin Concert - Memories of an Endless Journey at Carnegie Hall in NYC. There is an orchestra set up on a stage and behind them is a screen with a projection of the logo used for the Genshin Concert series.

Bee, Feens & Tif were lucky enough to attend the Genshin Concert ‘Memories of an Endless Journey’ at Carnegie Hall in NYC this month. If you’ve got the means and the concert visits a city near you, we truly recommend attending, it was beautiful!

Chinju Forest in Inazuma, a nation within the world of Teyvat in Genshin Imapct. The forest has a Japanese styled red arch that leads you in through a broken stone path. Behind the arch are trees and a dark sky.

The majority of the Akitsu Kimodameshi event takes place in the Chinju Forest and the surrounding beach. If you are not familiar with this area, it is south of the the Grand Narukami Shrine & Kamisato Estate. It’s always night with blue orbs floating around.

Illustration of the youkai of Japanese Folklore. It is done in a traditional art style, native to Japan, using water colors and black line work. It shows numerous youkai teasing a human.

Al talks about the IRL connection of youkai in Japanese culture. In fact, the youkai we meet in game are actual types of youkai in folklore. This includes the three young youkai from the event but also Itto (oni), Kirara (nekomata), Kujou Sara (tengu), Yae Miko (kitsune), and the other residents of Chinju Forest – the bake danuki.

Chongyun, from Genshin Impact, eating a popsicle at Wuwang Hill. Chongyun holds the blue ice pop up to his face, covering his mouth. Behind him is a broken and abandoned home.

As Feens reminds us, this is not the first Test of Courage that we’ve come across. We participate in one with Chongyun in his character hangout. While everyone is scared, Chongyun is disappointed to not find an actual ghost.

Arataki Itto during the event Akitsu Kimodameshi in Genshin Impact. He is hanging upside down with his hands out in a scary manner. If though he seems to be trying to scare us, he has a large smile on his face.

Itto is a main character in this event and is determined to scare anyone and everyone, especially his gang! Which is also a main theme of the event. Even the shrine maiden running the tests gets in on the action and tries her hardest to frighten us.

We get the option of choosing a partner in the Test of Courage phases and Bee runs thru the slight changes in story and plot based on the person you chose. In the first round we get to choose from Kamisato Ayaka, Kaedehara Kazuha, and Gorou. In the second round we choose from Sayu, Thoma, and Yoimiya. And then in the third round we are accompanied by Shikanoin Heizou.

The Toukabou Shigure youkai sword received by players during the Akitsu Kimodameshi event in Genshin Impact. This sword looks more like a red umbrella with a gold tip and a face on it. The face has one red eye and a tongue sticking out of the mouth. The handle of the umbrella looks like a leg with a clawed foot at the bottom. Around the item there is a red sparkly circle.

As Feens mentions, at the end of the event we were offered the Toukabou Shigure sword. An odd looking umbrella sword with one eye and a tongue sticking out. This is no ordinary sword though, its actually a youkai. You can learn about this tsukumogami at the Genshin Wiki (or within the weapon description).

Paimon trying to scare other players during the Test of Courage event in Inazuma, Teyvat. She looks intensely at someone off screen, the words "Wooga booga booga" underneath her.

Tif is obsessed with Paimon’s scaring tactics when they run across the three young youkai. What’s your best scare tactic?

Speaking of awesome Paimon moments, Detective Paimon during the first archon quest in Fontaine is AMAZING. How could you not laugh when she popped up with the spectacles and mustache?! Feens’ idea of a monocle would have been just as brilliant as well.

The young youkai attempting to recreate the Mikawa Flower Festival in Inazuma. Hitotsume Kozou (top left), Kappa (top right), and Youko (bottom).

The three young youkai kids we meet look like human children wearing masks. Which perhaps was their plan to not scare us away. From top-left to bottom, Hitotsume Kozou is the cyclops, Kappa is the green faced one, and Youko is the one with the cat-like kitsune mask.

Hanyuuda Chizuru, a youkai featured in the event Akitsu Kimodameshi in Genshin Impact. It is a close up of her face. One eye is red, but the other is covered by three red and pink flowers. The main red flower has a small, lizard like eye, in the middle of it.

Hanyuuda Chizuru, the central character of the quest, is also a youkai. We meet her as a woman with a flower over one eye (that also has a weird little eye as Feens points out). Heizou deduces that she is a tsukumogami type of youkai and her true self is located somewhere on the beach.

The hagoita paddles used at the Mikawa Flower Festival in Genshin Impact. These paddles are brown and more rectangular shaped. They have pink flowers pained on them with green leaves.

It turns out that Chizuru is actually the hagoita paddles from the story of Kamai and the samauri. Their friendship begins and ends with a game of Akitsu Hazura (Haneasobi).

Kamai Kenji, a powerful youkai described in the Genshin Impact story Akitsu Kimodameshi. He is a weasel standing upright while wearing a human kimono that is black. He holds his arms out and up in excitement, holding a cup of Saki in one hand.

The story of the youkai Kamai Kenji and the samurai Yanagibashi Takuto marks the start of youkai and humans living together.

Sayu, a ninja character from Genshin Impact who is not a tanuki. She stands diagonal with one finger up to her mouth as she thinks.

And one last note, Sayu is not a tanuki!
